The Luck Reunion: A family affair

The Luck Reunion: A family affair

During Austin’s biggest week in music, beyond the hustle of downtown lies the beloved Luck Reunion. The Luck Reunion takes place on Willie Nelson’s historic “Luck, TX” property and celebrates the evolution of American roots music. Music legends who have forged their own creative paths without compromise share the spotlight with the up-and-coming artists following in their footsteps.

As Willie Nelson’s “Luck” has become a gathering place for artists, it’s become a family affair—to play poker, pick, and trade stories—fostering the Luck Reunion’s goal of bringing artists together, along with some of their most dedicated fans, for collaborative and memorable moments.

Southwest Airlines officially joined the family in 2017 as the presenting sponsor, further demonstrating the airline’s commitment to propel Artists On The Rise and support them along their journey.

Over the years, Southwest has found a special place at the festival, offering attendees a unique experience each year. Most recently, the Southwest Concierge welcomed attendees to the Festival, providing helpful information and a spot for guests to grab a coveted Luck Reunion bandana. As festival goers enjoyed Luck, they could visit the Southwest and Rethreaded General Store, which showcased the partnership between the airline and the organization dedicated to creating choice for survivors of human trafficking. Southwest gifted attendees with coasters that Rethreaded employees made from aircraft seat leather.

Southwest has also spent time with a number of Luck’s artists during the Southwest Porch Sessions, which offered a glimpse into their journeys and what we have to look forward to from these amazing Artists on the Rise.

Ida Mae participated and rose to the top in Southwest: On The Rise to Luck Reunion 2020.

“We wanted to make something simple and honest and raw,” says Chris Turpin, one half of the breakout British duo Ida Mae. “We wanted to make a record our way, with no compromises.”

That brand of fiercely unconditional commitment—to the songs, to the sound, to each other — has defined Ida Mae from the start, and it courses through the veins of the band’s brilliant debut, ‘Chasing Lights.’ Blending elements of vintage Delta blues and gritty rock and roll with boldly modern arrangements and fearless punk swagger, the record captures Ida Mae in its purest form, with Turpin and his longtime musical partner Stephanie Jean performing nearly everything live in the studio under the guidance of legendary producer Ethan Johns (Ray LaMontagne, Laura Marling, Kings of Leon). It’s an electrifying collection, the kind of record that feels both familiar and groundbreaking all at once, fueled by dazzling musicianship, breathtaking harmonies, and the sort of versatile, timeless songwriting that’s earned the band tour dates with everyone from Greta Van Fleet and Blackberry Smoke to Marcus King and The Lone Bellow.

"Moser reveals himself as a contemplative, wandering soul, soaked in an age old cynicism and plainspoken wisdom."-Secret Meeting (UK).

Upon the closing of a career as a professional ballet dancer, Jordan Moser brought his other life-long passion of song-writing to center stage with his release of “Long Night” on Keeled Scales. Paste Magazine described “Long Night” as, "understated, but quietly vibrant and unexpectedly absorbing.”

Early on, Jordan Moser cut his teeth busking in New York City while pursuing his dance career. Arriving in Austin in 2007, he found himself playing his songs in any and every cafe, bar, and venue in town. In 2017, Jordan and his band (Dailey Toliver, Molly Burch, Jeff Crozier) traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to record what would become “Long Night.”

Gabe Lee

Gabe Lee participated and rose to the top in Southwest: On The Rise to Luck Reunion 2020.

Gabe Lee's music is what you gravitate towards on a rainy day; discussions about love, the details of a wanderer, the observations of a prodigal. PopMatters writes that Lee excels at “establishing introspective, acoustic settings to detail a moment in the life of a character down on their luck.”

Lee's debut record, “farmland,” was released in March 2019 and received immensely high praise from both fans and media alike. Raised Rowdy notes that Lee’s songs “could be torn from the pages of a formal literary work.” Saving Country Music wrote that “you may struggle to find another collection of 10 songs so well-composed with wit, insight, and soul.”
