Thistle Farms
Thistle Farms is a nonprofit social enterprise dedicated to helping women survivors recover and heal from prostitution, trafficking, and addiction. They do this by providing a safe place to live, a meaningful job, and a lifelong sisterhood of support.
“Love Heals Everybody”. This is a sentiment Becca Stevens lives by.
In 1997 Stevens realized that her life circumstances – past trauma and abuse – had given her a purpose: a purpose to start her second chapter or, as she sees it, her first. The thing is, she didn’t just turn inward to improve herself...but, instead, she questioned how she could help the people around her.
What started as a sanctuary for just five female survivors developed into a full-fledged operation helping women recover and heal from prostitution, trafficking, and addiction. While the recovery process was successful, the residents were struggling to become financially self-sufficient, and Stevens was bound to do something about it: in 2001 she and the women started making and selling candles in a local church basement. The Thistle Farms social enterprise was born.
Today, dozens of women have successfully “graduated” from the two year program, which provides survivors a safe space to call home; job training; food; clothing; and counseling...all at no cost to the residents.
The best part? Everyone can experience the impact the Thistle Farms venture has on the women who need it the most.
While in Nashville, you can visit the cafe for a tea or coffee, or volunteer time working onsite helping make the company’s coveted products. For out-of-towners there are virtual volunteer opportunities including digital fundraising and social amplification. Stop by the online shop for luxurious home goods, candles, skin products, and the best natural bug spray you’ll ever try.
Whether you’re shopping, stopping by, or volunteering, you can walk away from Thistle Farms knowing that you’re supporting a cause that matters; and lifting up women who deserve a fresh (and safe) new beginning.
